Arsenal FC gained a crucial advantage ahead of the return leg in a tight encounter against Sporting CP.

Arsenal travelled to Lisbon for the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, hoping to secure an advantage ahead of the return leg at home next week.

The game started with the hosts dominating the early stages. Maximiliano Araújo had an effort saved by David Raya in the 6th minute, before Geny Catamo tested the goalkeeper again in the 10th minute after being picked out by a well-worked move.

The first half lacked clear-cut chances, with much of the action limited despite Sporting’s early pressure.

The second half saw a shift in control, with the visitors growing into the game and beginning to translate possession into opportunities.

Martin Zubimendi had the ball in the net, but his effort was ruled out. Despite Arsenal’s improved control, Sporting continued to pose a threat, with Luis Suárez coming close in the 87th minute from a fast break only to be denied once again by Raya.

The breakthrough for the Gunners came in the 91st minute. Gabriel Martinelli, introduced in the 76th minute, carried the ball forward before setting up Kai Havertz, who finished to give Arsenal the lead the decisive moment in a tightly contested match.

The second leg will take place next Wednesday, with Arsenal now favourites to progress given their one-goal advantage and home support.

There are still doubts over whether Bukayo Saka will be available, having missed recent games through injury.
