Sporting CP vs Arsenal FC presents a defining moment in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

On Tuesday, Arsenal will travel to Lisbon, Portugal, to face Sporting Lisbon in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.

Sporting Lisbon, the hosts, come into this game with three straight wins on the bounce, including a 5–0 extra-time victory over Norwegian underdogs Bodø/Glimt, where they overturned a 3–0 deficit.

Whilst Arsenal come into this game after back-to-back defeats against Manchester City and Southampton, which saw them fail to progress in both competitions. Arsenal will need to build momentum to maintain their Champions League ambitions and Premier League push.

Last Meeting

The last time both teams met was in November 2024 at the Estádio José Alvalade, where Arsenal secured a dominant 5–1 victory. They were slight favourites heading into the match despite facing a strong attacking trio of Viktor Gyökeres, Trincão and Marcus Edwards.

Arsenal created five big chances and recorded an xG of 3.89, while preventing Sporting from registering a single big chance despite having less possession and fewer total shots.

Strengths of Both Teams

Sporting are a highly offensive side, having scored the most goals in Liga Portugal with an impressive 72 goals from just 27 matches this season.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are known for their defensive solidity, conceding the fewest goals in both the Premier League and Champions League. They are also tied with Como (22) for the fewest goals conceded across Europe’s top five leagues.

Injury / Suspension News

For Sporting, key midfielder Morten Hjulmand is suspended due to accumulated yellow cards. Fotis Ioannidis, Nuno Santos and Geovany Quenda are all out injured, while Luis Guilherme remains a doubt.

For Arsenal, Eberechi Eze is out with a calf injury, Piero Hincapié is sidelined with a muscle issue, and Mikel Merino and Noni Madueke are also unavailable. Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus, Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Magalhães and Jurrien Timber are all doubts ahead of the game.
