Loud cheers erupted inside Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium as Spain and Cape Verde battled through a fiercely contested 2026 FIFA World Cup group-stage match, ultimately ending in a 0-0 draw.

The match began with Spain dominating possession while Cape Verde produced a resolute defensive display against the UEFA Euro 2024 champions during the opening 20 minutes.

Spain’s strength came from their precise ball control and teamwork, registering more attempts on goal than Cape Verde throughout the first half-hour of play.

Pedri’s first attempt on goal was ruled out due to Marc Cucurella being in an offside position in the build-up. Nevertheless, Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, who at 40 years of age became the second-oldest debutant in men’s FIFA World Cup history, dealt confidently with the danger.

Spain focused much of their attacking play down the left flank until around the 60-minute mark, with Gavi and Cucurella combining to force Cape Verde into constant defensive adjustments. This approach reflected the absence of Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal from the starting line-up, with Spain opting not to risk his previous hamstring injury despite head coach Luis de la Fuente describing him as fully fit.

Alongside their disciplined defensive display, Cape Verde – two-time AFCON quarter-finalists and World Cup debutants – demonstrated impressive tactical organisation by building from the back and switching play effectively during the first half.

The tension was palpable as both teams competed with fierce determination. Spain sought to reclaim the FIFA World Cup title they last won in South Africa in 2010 after a 15-year wait that included a shock Round of 16 exit to Morocco in 2022.

Meanwhile, Cape Verde looked to seize a historic opportunity against their illustrious opponents as they competed in their first-ever World Cup, becoming the smallest nation to qualify for the tournament since Iceland in 2018.

Following the second hydration break, Lamine Yamal entered the match as a substitute for Mikel Merino. The introduction marked the teenager’s World Cup debut and shifted Spain’s attacking emphasis from the left flank to the right, with much of their creativity funnelled through the 18-year-old during the final 30 minutes.

As the contest approached its conclusion, Nico Williams was introduced in place of Rodri, offering Spain renewed attacking impetus and highlighting the depth of an exciting new generation of talent.

Spain’s UEFA Euro 2024 triumph has provided invaluable experience for emerging stars such as Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Gavi, and Nico Williams, all of whom continue to form the foundation of a squad accustomed to competing at the highest level.

After five minutes of added time, the final whistle confirmed a goalless draw, with Cape Verde earning a memorable point against one of world football’s traditional powerhouses in their 2026 FIFA World Cup group-stage opener.
