Fifteen meetings, five wins each and five draws. Few rivalries in modern European football are as finely balanced as Real Madrid vs Manchester City and for the sixth time in seven seasons, the Champions League has paired them together once again.

Yet while Real Madrid have progressed from three of their last five knockout ties against Guardiola’s City, Los Blancos’ recent form both domestically and in Europe coupled with their growing injury crisis suggests City may hold the edge this time around.

Previous Meeting This Season

The two sides have already crossed paths in this season’s Champions League, when Manchester City won 2–1 at the Santiago Bernabéu in December in a display that was arguably more dominant than the scoreline suggested.

That result proved significant during the league phase.

City finished eighth and qualified automatically for the Round of 16, while Real Madrid finished ninth and were forced into a play-off against Benfica, eventually progressing 4–1 on aggregate.

Domestic Form Comparison

Domestically, both sides find themselves in second place in their respective leagues.

Real Madrid sit four points behind Barcelona, while City trail Arsenal by seven points with a game in hand and a highly anticipated meeting with the Gunners still to come at the Etihad Stadium.

Despite the surface-level similarity, the form of the two sides feels very different.

Even after dropping points against Nottingham Forest in their last Premier League outing, City have begun to show their familiar late-season momentum, with Guardiola’s side unbeaten in their last 11 matches and winning nine games across all competitions.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, have lost two of their last three La Liga matches.

Having already dismissed Xabi Alonso, Madrid once again find themselves navigating a period of instability.

Interim boss Álvaro Arbeloa and his squad are struggling to meet the standards expected of a club that has won the Champions League 15 times.

Injury Concerns for Both Teams

Real Madrid’s injury situation offers little reassurance ahead of this tie.

UEFA reports confirm that Madrid are without:

  • David Alaba (calf)

  • Jude Bellingham (hamstring)

  • Dani Ceballos (calf)

  • Éder Militão (hamstring)

  • Rodrygo (knee)

  • Álvaro Carreras (calf)

Meanwhile Kylian Mbappé is also a doubt due to a knee injury.

Manchester City have their own concerns.

The main focus is Erling Haaland, who missed the FA Cup tie against Newcastle after featuring midweek. It remains unclear whether the Norwegian striker will be available, with Pep Guardiola keeping his cards close to his chest.

Otherwise, City’s confirmed absentees are:

  • Joško Gvardiol (leg)

  • Rico Lewis (ankle)

  • Mateo Kovačić (ankle)

A list significantly shorter than that of their Spanish opponents.

A Modern Champions League Classic

The stakes are huge in a fixture that is quickly becoming a modern Champions League classic.

With both clubs appearing likely to finish as domestic runners-up, the Champions League may represent their clearest path to silverware this season.

It is a statement that may feel strange given the stature of both clubs but it only highlights the extraordinary importance of this latest chapter between two of Europe’s most dominant sides.
