Porto vs Manchester City Preview: Can Enzo Maresca’s City Overcome the Portuguese Champions?

The opening night of the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League campaign sees Manchester City head to the Estádio do Dragão to take on Porto.

This is a battle between two sides who come into this match with 100% winning records in their respective leagues.

Porto have so far scored 12 goals and only conceded once, which came in their comeback victory against Moreirense on 4 September, when they ran out 2-1 winners.

Coventry managed to have 12 shots with an expected goals figure of 1.37, highlighting that perhaps City are vulnerable in transition even though they dominate the majority of possession.

Another potential talking point heading into this match is Enzo Maresca’s team selection, as in his press conference following the Coventry game he hinted at rotation, even for Erling Haaland, who scored his 300th career goal on Saturday.

Maresca said: "We need to protect Erling because again, the season is very long and he’s going to have games where he needs to recover."

City lack another natural striker in the squad after the sale of Omar Marmoush to Tottenham, so perhaps Antoine Semenyo or Phil Foden will be used as an alternative.

Maresca also picked out new signings Ayyoub Bouaddi and Illiman Ndiaye alongside City academy star Ryan McAidoo as players in contention to start.

Porto will also be forced to make changes, as Jan Bednarek is suspended following a red card he received in last season’s Europa League quarter-final second-leg defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Danish midfielder Victor Froholdt will also be unavailable after being taken to hospital following last Friday’s game, where he became unconscious following a terrible collision.

Francesco Farioli remains optimistic heading into the clash, as he acknowledged City are one of the favourites in the competition.

Despite their European heritage, Porto have never beaten Manchester City in a competitive game, with the latest meeting between the sides coming in 2020, when the match ended in a 0-0 draw.

The hosts will be looking to use their strong domestic form and home advantage to cause an early upset in the Champions League.
