Norway advanced to the Round of 32 after defeating Senegal 3-2 at NYNJ Stadium.

Following defeat to France in their opening fixture, Senegal arrived determined to produce a positive result.

Senegal’s team selection appeared geared towards winning the midfield battle, with Lamine Camara, Idrissa Gueye and Pape Gueye tasked with limiting Martin Ødegaard’s influence between the lines.

The inclusion of Kalidou Koulibaly at the heart of Senegal’s defence also set up an intriguing battle with Erling Haaland, who scored a brace in Norway’s opening victory over Iraq.

Norway won four consecutive aerial duels within the opening four minutes, almost capitalising on the third when Edouard Mendy denied Kristoffer Ajer’s close-range downward header.

Soon afterwards, Norway were forced into an early change as Julian Ryerson was replaced by Marcus Pedersen.

The substitution proved decisive.

Pedersen wasted no time making an impact, setting up Ødegaard within two minutes of coming on, although the captain fired his effort over the crossbar.

Senegal threatened soon afterwards, but Nicolas Jackson also blazed over the bar.

Ødegaard came close to opening the scoring after meeting Antonio Nusa’s cross, but Mendy reacted well, throwing out a leg to keep out the Norwegian midfielder’s low volley.

Norway eventually broke the deadlock after a misplaced pass from Koulibaly allowed Pedersen to break forward.

Driving into the penalty area, Pedersen fired a low effort beyond Mendy, who got a slight touch but could not prevent the ball from finding the net.

The goal marked Pedersen’s first international goal after coming off the bench an impressive contribution in his first appearance of the tournament.

Haaland then came within inches of extending Norway’s lead after capitalising on Mendy’s poor clearance, but his effort struck the woodwork.

Throughout the first half, Ødegaard continually found space between Senegal’s midfield and defence whenever the visitors stepped forward to press.

This enabled Norway to progress the ball effectively through central areas.

Senegal’s high press forced Norway deeper into their own half at times, but the African side remained wasteful in front of goal.

The visitors found an equaliser early in the second half when Ismaïla Sarr latched onto a flicked pass from Sadio Mané before finishing confidently.

However, the celebrations were short-lived.

Senegal once again failed to clear their lines inside the penalty area, allowing Patrick Berg to deliver a cross from the left which Haaland brilliantly volleyed into the roof of the net.

Norway maintained control throughout much of the second half, dictating the tempo through midfield.

Oscar Bobb came close to adding a fourth when his effort was headed over the crossbar by Pathé Ciss from close range.

Senegal threatened a late comeback through Sarr’s second goal of the evening, but Norway held firm to secure a hard-fought 3-2 victory and book their place in the Round of 32.
