Omar Marmoush’s double sent Manchester City into the FA Cup quarter-finals after a dominant display at St James’ Park.

Despite an uneasy opening and an early Harvey Barnes strike for Newcastle, Pep Guardiola’s rotated side fought back to secure a ninth FA Cup quarter-final appearance in ten years.

Manchester City had made 10 changes to the side that drew with Nottingham Forest midweek, and the lack of cohesion was visible in the opening exchanges.

Meanwhile, Newcastle fresh from their dramatic victory over the red half of Manchester began the match with renewed confidence and intensity.

A feisty FA Cup atmosphere, coupled with rustiness from City’s rotation, created early uncertainty.

James Trafford was caught between claiming and clearing a corner, gifting Nick Woltemade a headed effort towards an unguarded net. The Newcastle forward looked certain to score, but Nico González produced a crucial goal-line clearance to spare Trafford’s blushes.

The warning signs soon turned into a breakthrough.

In the 18th minute, Harvey Barnes fired Newcastle ahead. A pearl of a pass from Sandro Tonali exposed City’s high defensive line and sent Barnes racing in behind down the left wing.

The Englishman made no mistake, wrapping a clinical finish into the top corner for his 13th goal of the season.

However, Newcastle’s lead proved to be their only real foothold in the contest as momentum quickly shifted.

Manchester City began to find their rhythm, producing the kind of technical and dynamic football that pinned Newcastle back. Yet their attacks often lacked a decisive final touch a reminder of the absence of their usual focal point, Erling Haaland, who was sidelined through injury.

City finally found their equaliser in the 40th minute, albeit in unconventional fashion.

Jérémy Doku’s low cross travelled across the face of goal and found Savinho completely alone at the back post, where the ball ricocheted off the Brazilian almost statue-like and into the unguarded net.

As the first half drew to a close, City increased the pressure.

Savinho burst past a couple of Newcastle defenders and slipped Tijjani Reijnders through on goal, but the Dutchman dragged his one-on-one effort wide.

Moments later, Aaron Ramsdale was caught in possession while attempting to play out from the back, but Newcastle’s defence reacted quickly to bail their goalkeeper out.

As the second half resumed, City’s intensity immediately returned.

Just two minutes after the restart, Omar Marmoush converted from close range after Manchester City carved Newcastle open down the right flank. Savinho and Matheus Nunes combined neatly before delivering the decisive ball into the area.

At the hour mark, Newcastle survived another scare.

Ramsdale parried Marmoush’s strike into the path of Reijnders, whose follow-up drifted across goal before Lewis Hall slid in to clear.

Moments later, John Stones produced a moment of quality with a pass reminiscent of Kevin De Bruyne at his best. The City defender split Newcastle’s midfield and defence with a perfectly threaded ball into the path of Savinho, but the Brazilian attempted to be too clever with a first-time pass and the move broke down.

Marmoush then delivered the decisive blow with a stunning strike.

The forward found space on the edge of the box and arrowed a shot into the top corner, putting the tie firmly in City’s control.

Newcastle needed a response, but with a two-goal cushion City turned pressure into control.

As the game drifted towards its conclusion and Newcastle struggled to threaten, the travelling City fans celebrated with their trademark Poznań.

Manchester City’s dominance in the FA Cup has become routine.

This victory extended their record to 24 consecutive wins in the third, fourth and fifth rounds, with a combined score of 92–12, while also keeping alive their push for a fourth consecutive FA Cup final.

Both sides now turn their attention to the Champions League knockout stages, where they face two of Spain’s biggest clubs.

Manchester City travel to the Santiago Bernabéu to face Real Madrid, while Newcastle welcome Barcelona to St James’ Park.

For City, their season remains wide open as Guardiola’s side continue to compete on all four fronts.

Newcastle, meanwhile, may now look to Europe for inspiration, with their domestic campaign faltering as they sit 12th in the Premier League, a point behind Sunderland.
