Lamine Yamal’s stoppage-time penalty rescued a 1–1 draw for Barcelona against Newcastle United at St James’ Park, leaving the Champions League tie finely balanced heading into the second leg.
William Osula led the line in the absence of Nick Woltemade and began the game well, causing a variety of different problems for the Barcelona back line with his speed, strength and runs in behind.
Tonight’s match at St James’ Park was always expected to produce goals, with previous meetings between Barcelona and Newcastle showcasing attacking quality including Marcus Rashford’s brace in a previous 2–1 victory.
Barcelona entered the match having failed to keep a clean sheet in their previous 11 Champions League games, something which provided confidence for Eddie Howe’s men.

Hansi Flick’s response to Newcastle’s explosive front three of Barnes, Osula and Elanga was to set up a high defensive line to counter their pace and catch their runs early.
The approach proved effective, forcing Newcastle into six offside positions during the game.
The first half was a cagey affair, with neither side producing an expected goals figure above 0.40.
Newcastle slightly edged their Catalan opponents thanks to their speed and intensity, while Anthony Elanga’s constant threat down the right flank caused problems for Flick’s back four.

Lamine Yamal was a bright spark for Barcelona, operating in the number ten role and testing Lewis Hall on several occasions down the left side but Lewis Hall kept his composure and dealt with Yamal.
Elanga picked up where he left off in the second half, delivering dangerous balls into Barcelona’s penalty area and igniting the Geordie fans behind the goal.
The match soon turned into a battle of transitions, with both teams trying to gain an advantage ahead of the second leg in Catalonia.
Robert Lewandowski had Barcelona’s best opportunity when Raphinha slipped the Polish striker through inside the Newcastle box, but the chance went begging.
With the match poised at 0–0, both managers turned to their benches.
Dani Olmo and Marcus Rashford were introduced for the visitors, while Jacob Murphy, Tino Livramento and Anthony Gordon came on for the hosts.
Newcastle thought they had taken the lead in the 73rd minute when Harvey Barnes curled a shot onto the post before Joelinton tapped the rebound into the net, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 86th minute.
Substitute Jacob Murphy delivered a superb cross towards the back post, where Harvey Barnes finished calmly to give Newcastle the lead in front of the Gallagher End.
With only minutes remaining, it appeared Newcastle would take a crucial advantage into the second leg.
However, Barcelona produced late drama.
Dani Olmo, introduced earlier in the half, produced a moment of magic in the 94th minute, beating his marker before winning a penalty.

Up stepped Lamine Yamal, who showed remarkable composure to convert from the spot and level the tie, breaking Geordie hearts.
Newcastle can take pride in their performance, having arguably been the better side on the night.
Barcelona, meanwhile, will be thankful for Lamine Yamal’s calmness under pressure, which ensured the tie remains perfectly balanced heading into the decisive second leg.
