Manchester United’s wait for silverware continues after a disappointing 2–1 defeat at home to Brighton & Hove Albion in the third round of the FA Cup, confirming another trophyless season at Old Trafford.
Former United academy graduate Danny Welbeck delivered the decisive moment just after the hour mark, smashing home a left-footed finish that ultimately proved the difference. United mounted a late fightback, but Brighton showed composure and discipline to see the game out.
The match began at full throttle, with United flying out of the blocks. Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele was forced into action inside the opening two minutes, rushing off his line to smother Diogo Dalot’s effort. Dalot later blazed over from range, before Bruno Fernandes tested Steele again following a sharp free-kick routine involving Kobbie Mainoo.

Despite the early pressure, it was Brighton who struck first. In the 12th minute, Brajan Gruda reacted quickest after Georginio Rutter’s header was cleared off the line, hammering the ball home to silence Old Trafford.
Brighton nearly doubled their lead soon after when a loose pass from Senne Lammens was intercepted by Welbeck, but the goalkeeper recovered well to deny the striker. United continued to push before the break, with Lisandro Martínez, Fernandes and Matheus Cunha all going close, yet Brighton held firm.
Just after the hour mark, the Seagulls delivered the knockout blow. Joël Veltman’s ball down the left found Gruda, who teed up Welbeck. One touch, then a thunderous finish into the roof of the net a statement goal from a player who knows this stage well.

Welbeck’s relationship with his former club remains a familiar storyline. Since leaving United for Arsenal in 2014, the forward has developed a habit of punishing the Red Devils. This latest strike took his tally to eight goals against United in all competitions, now his joint-highest return against any opponent, level with his record against West Ham.
United gave themselves hope late on when Benjamin Šeško powered home Fernandes’ corner with five minutes remaining, setting up a nervy finish. However, any momentum was quickly extinguished when Shea Lacey was sent off after picking up two quick yellow cards.
Brighton managed the closing stages intelligently to secure the win, while United were left to reflect on another frustrating cup exit and another reminder of Welbeck’s enduring quality.

Beyond the individual narratives, this defeat carried significant consequences for Manchester United. The loss confirmed another season without silverware, with the club crashing out of both the FA Cup and EFL Cup at the first hurdle a feat not suffered in the same campaign since 1981–82.

Uncertainty continues to surround the club, with fans still awaiting confirmation of an interim manager. That instability comes at a critical time, as United prepare to welcome neighbours Manchester City to Old Trafford in Saturday’s early kick-off.
Brighton, meanwhile, turn their attention to AFC Bournemouth, as they look to extend their unbeaten run to five matches.
