Manchester City must produce an extraordinary Champions League comeback at the Etihad Stadium to overturn a three-goal deficit after Federico Valverde’s hat-trick in the first leg.
Real Madrid arrive at the Etihad with a 3–0 advantage in their Champions League Round of 16 tie against Manchester City.
Los Blancos have Federico Valverde to thank for their commanding lead, with the Uruguayan scoring a first-half hat-trick in last week’s encounter.
City face an uphill battle and must deliver a major comeback against opponents who have repeatedly proven difficult in recent Champions League meetings.
Pep Guardiola’s side have been eliminated by Real Madrid in each of the last two seasons, and with Madrid holding a significant advantage, history threatens to repeat itself for a third consecutive campaign.
City’s recent form has also been inconsistent.
While competing with Arsenal in the Premier League title race, they have dropped points against West Ham and Nottingham Forest, either side of the first-leg defeat.
However, the Etihad remains a fortress.
Manchester City are unbeaten in their last 14 home matches, not losing there since November — a record Guardiola will look to rely on as they attempt to overturn the deficit.
Real Madrid Confidence High
Despite their dominance in Europe, Álvaro Arbeloa’s side have shown vulnerability domestically.
Defeats to Osasuna and Getafe in the past month have seen Madrid slip four points behind Barcelona in the La Liga title race.
However, individual brilliance — particularly from Federico Valverde — has helped steady their campaign.
The midfielder has scored five goals in his last three appearances, taking his total contributions to 21 goals and assists this season.
Real Madrid head into the second leg with confidence, having won their last three matches in all competitions.
History is also firmly on their side.
Los Blancos have never been eliminated from a European knockout tie after winning the first leg by three or more goals, progressing in all 35 previous occasions.
Head-to-Head
The two sides will meet in the Champions League knockout stages for the fifth consecutive season, with Real Madrid winning the last two ties.
Madrid secured a 6–3 aggregate victory last season, while the previous meeting saw them progress via penalties after a 4–4 draw on aggregate.
Manchester City famously defeated Madrid during their treble-winning 2022/23 campaign, but the Spanish giants have often had the upper hand in this rivalry.
The teams also met earlier this season in the league phase, where Erling Haaland’s penalty secured a comeback win for City.
Team News
Real Madrid have several key absentees despite their strong position.
Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham remain sidelined with knee and hamstring injuries, while Rodrygo is unavailable due to an ACL injury.
Defensive concerns also persist.
David Alaba and Éder Militão are doubts, while Álvaro Carreras, Raúl Asencio and Ferland Mendy are also struggling with fitness issues.
Dani Ceballos is unavailable.
This could leave Madrid vulnerable defensively, placing further emphasis on players like Valverde and Vinícius Júnior to maintain attacking threat.
Manchester City also have injury concerns.
Joško Gvardiol and Rico Lewis are expected to miss the game, although the return of Mateo Kovačić could provide a boost in midfield.
Erling Haaland is expected to lead the line as he looks to end a recent goal drought.
Defensively, Marc Guéhi and Rúben Dias are likely to partner in central defence as City aim to improve after their struggles in the first leg.
Predicted Line-ups
Manchester City XI:
Donnarumma; Nunes, Guéhi, Dias, Aït-Nouri; Rodri, Bernardo Silva, O’Reilly; Semenyo, Cherki, Haaland
Real Madrid XI:
Courtois; Alexander-Arnold, Huijsen, Rüdiger, García; Tchouaméni, Camavinga, Güler; Díaz, Vinícius Jr.
