Manchester City delivered a dominant 4–0 victory over Liverpool FC in the FA Cup quarter-final, with Erling Haaland scoring a ruthless hat-trick to pile pressure on Arne Slot.
Liverpool actually looked the better team in the opening 20 minutes, moving the ball confidently, but Mohamed Salah and Hugo Ekitike missed two big chances which could have changed the outcome of the tie.

It was one mistake from Virgil van Dijk which led to the opening goal, as he tripped over O’Reilly in the box, allowing City to take control.
Once the first goal went in, the game shifted from competitive to controlled. Liverpool weren’t necessarily poor in moments they simply couldn’t live with the tempo and intelligence of City’s play.

Just before half-time, Haaland added another with a powerful header.
What stood out most was City’s balance. The midfield dictated proceedings with authority, recycling possession while probing for openings, while the defensive line remained alert to Liverpool’s limited threat. It was dominance without recklessness a performance built on structure as much as flair.
By the time the second goal arrived, Liverpool’s resistance had started to fade. Their press looked disjointed, as it has for much of the season. City exploited the spaces ruthlessly, switching play and dragging defenders out of position. Every attack carried weight; every transition felt dangerous.

The third and fourth goals only underlined the gulf on the night. City weren’t just winning they were enjoying themselves. There was a confidence, almost an inevitability, in everything they did. Liverpool, meanwhile, looked like a side searching for answers but finding none.
For Pep Guardiola, this was close to the ideal performance: intensity without panic, creativity without risk, and a cutting edge that turned control into goals. For Liverpool, it was a sobering reminder of how unforgiving the top level can be when even small margins slip.
In the wider context, results like this extend beyond the 90 minutes. For City, it reinforces their authority and sends a message to the rest of the competition. For Liverpool, it raises questions not just about the result, but about how they respond.
Next up for Slot’s side is a trip to face Paris Saint-Germain. If they perform as they did here, they risk another heavy defeat.

Salah also missed a penalty, adding further frustration on a difficult night for Liverpool.
Guardiola will now look to carry this momentum into the league, with a tough fixture against Chelsea FC at Stamford Bridge up next.
