An unfortunate second-half own goal saw Brentford narrowly overcome plucky Macclesfield in the FA Cup, bringing the National League North side’s fairytale run to an end.
Macclesfield FC made headlines last month when they knocked out reigning holders Crystal Palace in the third round. But lightning could not strike twice for the optimistic Silkmen as Keith Andrews’ Brentford progressed with a hard-fought 1–0 victory.
The only goal of the game arrived in the 70th minute. A well-worked Brentford move found Aaron Hickey wide on the left, and his dangerous byline cross was diverted into his own net by the unfortunate Sam Heathcote.

The resilient hosts battled until the final whistle but ultimately fell short of replicating January’s dramatic giant-killing.
A Performance That Defied the League Gap
Going into Monday night’s tie, the two sides were separated by a staggering 122 league places. Yet Macclesfield’s performance suggested a gap far narrower than the table implied.
From the first whistle, John Rooney’s men showed no fear. They created the first opportunity of the game when Paul Dawson headed well over from a deep set piece. Shortly after, Luke Duffy unleashed a fierce strike from range that narrowly cleared the bar a warning that their victory over Crystal Palace had been no fluke.

Another Dawson effort from distance kept Brentford alert, and while the game began to even out as the half progressed, neither side fully seized control before the interval.
The best chance of the opening period fell to Brentford. Hickey cut the ball back to former Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson, but his under-hit effort was brilliantly saved by Max Dearnley in the Macclesfield goal.
Brentford Raise the Tempo
Keith Andrews’ team emerged for the second half with renewed urgency, asserting their Premier League pedigree more clearly.
Still, Macclesfield refused to fold. Throwing bodies on the line and defending with discipline, they frustrated Brentford and maintained belief among the home crowd.

The decisive moment came with 20 minutes remaining. Hickey once again delivered from the left, and under pressure, Heathcote could only divert the ball past his own goalkeeper. A cruel blow for a side that had defended so bravely.
Pride in Defeat for the Silkmen
Macclesfield pushed forward in the closing stages but could not find an equaliser. At full time, the initial disappointment quickly turned into applause, with supporters recognising the scale of what their side had achieved.
Exiting the FA Cup with pride, the Silkmen can now focus on their promotion push in the National League North, knowing they have tested two Premier League sides this season defeating one and pushing another to the limit.
For Brentford, a fifth-round tie against West Ham awaits. While not their most fluent display, the Bees showed professionalism and patience qualities essential in cup football.
As far as giant-killing narratives go, it ends Macclesfield 1–1 against Premier League opposition an achievement worthy of admiration.
