Amad Diallo’s dramatic 90th-minute winner against Ecuador secured three valuable points for Ivory Coast after he came off the bench. The strike put the 2023 African champions firmly on course to reach the knockout stages for the first time in their history, having not appeared at a World Cup since 2014, and ended Ecuador’s 19-game unbeaten run.

Huge credit also goes to Wilfried Singo for the surging run that created the only goal of the match, delivering an inch-perfect cross that even Ecuador’s formidable back three of Willian Pacho, Alan Franco, and Joel Ordóñez could not deal with.

This encounter had always looked likely to be a battle for second place in Group E following Germany’s seven-goal demolition of Curaçao earlier in the day.

It was fitting that the two sides met at Philadelphia Stadium, the hometown of Rocky Balboa and the setting for the famous steps featured in every montage.

An entertaining contest between La Tri and Les Éléphants, featuring contrasting styles, seemed destined to end in a draw. A point would have suited both teams as they battled for a potential knockout place and second spot in a tightly contested group at least until Amad’s introduction.

Major Incident

One of the biggest surprises from the Ivory Coast team selection was that Manchester United winger Amad did not start, despite his influential performances during World Cup qualifying. Nicolas Pépé took his place, even though he had not been selected for the previous AFCON squad.

La Tri were excellent throughout the first half, with their rotations and movement down the left flank proving particularly effective. That movement also restricted Yan Diomande, forcing him into extensive defensive duties before he was switched across to the left wing.

Ecuador looked extremely well coached under Sebastián Beccacece, a disciple of Jorge Sampaoli and Marcelo Bielsa. However, they lacked conviction in front of goal.

With captain Enner Valencia carrying an injury into the match and only declared fit shortly before kick-off, he was not at his lethal best and lasted 75 minutes, despite enjoying one clear chance early on.

La Tri arguably deserved to lead during the first half after hitting the woodwork twice through John Yeboah and Alan Minda.

The Ecuadorians perhaps showed too much respect to Diomande, often assigning two defenders to him on the right.

Piero Hincapié, tasked with containing the 19-year-old winger, endured a difficult evening against the blistering pace of the Ivorian, who repeatedly stretched the defence.

Man of the Match

There is little doubt that Diomande is one of Europe’s hottest young prospects. His current club, RB Leipzig, will undoubtedly be delighted with his performances, but displays of this calibre have only intensified speculation surrounding his future.

Diomande looked even more dangerous in the second half after switching back to the right flank, where he delivered several dangerous crosses into the penalty area and recorded a tournament-leading 12 touches inside the opposition box. His relentless dribbling and quick one-two combinations continually unsettled Ecuador’s defence. It is little surprise that clubs such as Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly shown strong interest.

Key Moments

The turning point arrived when Ivory Coast head coach Emerse Faé introduced Amad before the hour mark, providing greater balance to the team.

The tactical switch saw Amad and Diomande interchange positions, allowing Diomande to operate more comfortably while Amad attacked from the opposite side with his unpredictable dribbling.

Ecuador struggled to contain the pair throughout the closing stages, and Amad’s determination to make an impact ultimately proved decisive.

What’s Next

This victory marks the first win for an African nation at this World Cup and could be a sign of more to come, with Ivory Coast’s wing play proving their most dangerous attacking weapon.

There will now be serious consideration over handing Amad a starting role when Les Éléphants face Germany in their next fixture.

As for Ecuador, this performance demonstrated that they are not solely a defensive side but are also capable of devastating attacks in transition. Pedro Vite was among the standout performers, impressing as a left-footed creator operating within Ecuador’s 3-4-3 system.

La Tri’s pressing should not be overlooked either. It was relentless and took Ivory Coast almost 20 minutes to consistently find solutions, something that could pose problems for Curaçao in the next round of fixtures.

Earlier in Group E, four-time world champions Germany opened their campaign with a 7-1 victory over World Cup debutants Curaçao. Ecuador now travel to Kansas to face Curaçao, while Ivory Coast take on Germany in Toronto, Canada.
