Iran and New Zealand kicked off their World Cup campaigns in the early hours of this morning by playing out an entertaining 2-2 draw.

New Zealand opened the scoring inside seven minutes after some strong hold-up play from Chris Wood resulted in Elijah Just being slipped through on goal, with the winger calmly slotting past Alireza Beiranvand.

Iran responded just after the half-hour mark, with Ramin Rezaeian starting the move by passing inside before making a penetrating run through the New Zealand defence and calmly rounding Max Crocombe to equalise.

Elijah Just grabbed his second goal of the game shortly after half-time to restore New Zealand’s lead. Once again, Chris Wood was heavily involved, combining with Just in a neat one-two before the forward delicately lifted his finish over the advancing goalkeeper.

It took Iran only ten minutes to draw level again, with Mohammad Mohebbi making it 2-2 in the 64th minute. Rezaeian, now turning provider, delivered a perfect cross into the box that found the unmarked Mohebbi, who headed home confidently from six yards out.

Iran began the match with intent, as Mehdi Taremi forced Max Crocombe into an early save before striking the post from 20 yards. But it was New Zealand who landed the first blow. After a neat exchange with Chris Wood, Elijah Just put the All Whites ahead inside seven minutes.

Iran responded well after the early setback. Sarpreet Singh tested Beiranvand at the other end, but the momentum gradually shifted back towards Iran. Their pressure paid off shortly after the half-hour mark when Rezaeian burst through and levelled the scores with a composed finish.

The second half opened at a frantic pace. Nine minutes after the restart, New Zealand restored their advantage through Just once again, capitalising on another clever pass from Wood.

Iran answered quickly. Rezaeian, now in the role of creator, delivered an excellent cross that Mohebbi attacked decisively to bring the contest back to 2-2.

The closing stages were frantic. Iran pushed hardest for a winner, with a late far-post header brilliantly blocked at point-blank range.

New Zealand still threatened from set pieces, and Wood forced another save with a stoppage-time header, but neither side could find the decisive breakthrough as both teams settled for a point.
