Kylian Mbappé marked his 100th appearance for France in fitting fashion, scoring a sensational early screamer before adding a second as Les Bleus eventually overcame a stubborn Iraq side in a bizarre, storm-hit World Cup encounter.

The captain needed just 15 minutes to celebrate his landmark cap. Picking up possession on the edge of the area, Mbappé shifted the ball onto his right foot and unleashed an unstoppable strike that flew beyond the Iraqi goalkeeper and into the top corner.

It was the perfect way to mark a century of appearances in French colours and appeared to set the tone for a comfortable evening.

Instead, France found themselves frustrated for much of the remainder of the first half. Despite dominating possession, Didier Deschamps’ side struggled to break down a disciplined Iraqi defence. Chances were few and far between as Iraq sat deep, stayed organised and prevented France from finding their usual attacking rhythm.

Then came the first major disruption of the night.

With thunderstorm conditions worsening around the stadium, play was suspended shortly before the interval. What should have been a routine half-time break turned into a remarkable two-hour delay as officials waited for conditions to improve before allowing the teams to return.

When football finally resumed, it was Iraq who looked the more comfortable side.

The underdogs emerged from the extended break with renewed confidence and began asking questions of the French defence. For a spell, they looked capable of finding a route back into the contest and enjoyed their best period of the match.

However, disaster struck once again at the back.

A costly defensive error gifted possession to Ousmane Dembélé in a dangerous area. The French winger unselfishly squared the ball across goal for Mbappé, who calmly slotted home his second of the evening.

The goal marked another significant milestone for the French superstar. It moved him onto 16 World Cup goals, drawing level with Miroslav Klose in the all-time tournament scoring charts and leaving him just two behind Lionel Messi.

With Iraq’s resistance finally broken, France added a third to put the result beyond doubt.

Michael Olise, who had already supplied Mbappé’s opener, collected his second assist of the game with a perfectly weighted through ball that split the Iraqi defence.

Dembélé timed his run brilliantly before finishing confidently for his first major international tournament goal.

The victory secured France’s place in the knockout stages, although top spot in the group remains undecided. That battle will now be settled against Norway in what promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the group stage.

With Kylian Mbappé set to face Erling Haaland, the stage is now set for a blockbuster showdown.
