England made a winning start to their World Cup campaign with a 4-2 victory over Croatia in Dallas.

A brace from captain Harry Kane and second-half goals from Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford secured all three points for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

The result leaves England on the verge of qualification for the knockout stages.

Croatia Peg England Back in the First Half

England started the game as favourites to finish top of Group L and took the lead from the penalty spot after 12 minutes.

The penalty was initially awarded following a foul by Croatia captain Luka Modrić on England’s Noni Madueke.

It appeared as though Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livaković had saved Kane’s effort, but referee Clément Turpin ordered the penalty to be retaken after a brief VAR check.

Kane made no mistake with his second attempt.

Croatia grew into the game from that point onwards, with Bellingham producing a last-ditch tackle to prevent striker Petar Musa from shooting at close range soon after.

The pressure told in the 36th minute, as Martin Baturina’s strike from the edge of the penalty area flew beyond Jordan Pickford and into the top-left corner.

That sparked a flurry of chances before half-time, with England restoring their lead when Kane headed home Declan Rice’s out-swinging corner past Livaković before Modrić blocked Reece James’ free-kick in stoppage time.

Croatia levelled before the interval, however, as veteran winger Ivan Perišić latched onto a lofted ball inside the England penalty area and teed up Musa to score from close range.

England’s Quality Shines Through

A tactical shift from Thomas Tuchel saw Bellingham given greater freedom to operate in wider positions throughout the second half, while Kane dropped deeper into a more creative role.

The adjustment paid dividends almost immediately, as Bellingham latched onto Elliot Anderson’s lofted pass in the 47th minute and guided his finish into Livaković’s far corner to restore England’s lead.

England played with noticeably higher energy levels after the break, with Livaković producing sharp reaction saves from Nico O’Reilly and Anthony Gordon following a corner to keep Croatia in the contest.

Tuchel later introduced the creative trio of Marcus Rashford, Morgan Rogers, and Bukayo Saka to exploit Croatia’s tiring defence.

Despite those changes, Croatia continued to push forward, with Pickford making important saves to deny substitutes Marco Pašalić and Mateo Kovačić.

However, Croatia’s attacking ambition left them exposed at the back, allowing Saka to split the defence with a perfectly weighted pass to Rashford,

who calmly finished to effectively secure the victory for England.

Player of the Match: Harry Kane

Kane recovered superbly from seeing his initial penalty saved before being awarded a retake, finishing the match with two goals and drawing level with Gary Lineker as England’s joint-highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history.

His deeper role during the second half also helped England establish greater control in midfield, while his defensive work rate remained impressive throughout the 90 minutes.

With two goals already to his name, Kane has firmly established himself as an early contender for the tournament’s Golden Boot and remains central to England’s hopes of success.

The Bigger Picture

Both sides would still expect to qualify from Group L despite today’s result.

England’s victory places them in a commanding position to top the group and potentially face one of the highest-ranked third-placed teams in the Round of 32.

A win against Ghana on Tuesday, 23 June, would guarantee qualification for England, while Croatia will aim to get their campaign back on track when they face Panama in the early hours of Wednesday, 24 June (UK time).

Group L concludes for both teams on Saturday, 27 June.
