Colombia made a winning start to their 2026 World Cup campaign with a solid 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan.

Led from the front by Luis Díaz, Los Cafeteros produced a dominant display throughout to kick off their first World Cup appearance since 2018.

Uzbekistan, coached by 2006 World Cup-winning captain Fabio Cannavaro, defended resolutely at times but were ultimately second best in both possession and goalscoring opportunities.

Story of the Match

The Colombian side, although perhaps not possessing the same level of talent as previous generations, still fielded a respectable starting line-up. A formidable front three of James Rodríguez, Luis Díaz, and Sporting CP’s Luis Suárez offered pace and attacking quality in abundance.

Uzbekistan, making their World Cup debut, looked primarily to Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov as their standout player, having made 27 Premier League appearances since joining the club in January 2025.

The match began as expected, with Colombia controlling the tempo of play. Utilising sharp triangular passing and quick movement, Luis Díaz demonstrated exactly why Bayern Munich invested £65.5 million to sign him, with much of Colombia’s attacking play flowing down the left flank.

The 29-year-old created the first major opportunity of the contest when John Arias threaded a perfectly weighted through ball into his path. Díaz struck across goal, beating the goalkeeper, only to see his effort agonisingly rebound off the inside of the post.

With Uzbekistan offering very little attacking threat, it did not take long for Colombia to open the scoring.

Once again, Díaz was at the heart of the move, delivering a beautiful lofted pass into the penalty area for the advancing Daniel Muñoz, who volleyed superbly past the goalkeeper. It was a magnificent finish that ignited the Colombian supporters before half-time.

The second half began in similar fashion, with Colombia forcing Uzbekistan onto the back foot.

However, when the White Wolves found an opportunity, they made it count.

A wayward cross into the area saw Eldor Shomurodov direct a well-timed volley towards Camilo Vargas. The Colombian goalkeeper should have dealt with it more comfortably, but instead spilled the ball over the bar, allowing Abbosbek Fayzullaev to nod home from close range on the hour mark.

With the scores level, Colombia continued to rely on their pace and aggressive pressing to force mistakes. A turnover won by Puerta in midfield sparked a swift counter-attack, leaving Luis Díaz with the chance to restore his side’s lead, which he duly did just five minutes after Uzbekistan’s equaliser.

In truth, Colombia never looked likely to lose the game, but they never appeared completely comfortable either, particularly during a spell of sustained Uzbek pressure in the final quarter. That may concern head coach Néstor Lorenzo, especially considering the significant gap in the FIFA World Rankings between the two nations.

Nevertheless, it was the Copa América finalists who had the final say. A whipped cross from Cucho Hernández found the head of Jaminton Campaz, who sealed the victory with Colombia’s third goal.

It was a match largely dominated by Colombia, although further improvements will be required if they are to mount a serious challenge deep into the tournament.

Final score: Colombia 3-1 Uzbekistan.

Man of the Match

Luis Díaz – The Colombian winger was at the centre of almost everything positive his side produced, creating chances, providing quality in possession, and capping an outstanding display with a goal of his own.
