Arsenal salvaged a 1–1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena thanks to a late penalty from Kai Havertz in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie, with the German midfielder coming back to haunt his former club.

The match began at a high intensity, with both sides enjoying spells of possession and showing early attacking intent. David Raya was forced into a crucial save in the seventh minute after Christian Kofane tested the Arsenal goalkeeper, as Leverkusen applied early pressure.

The Gunners came close to opening the scoring in the nineteenth minute when a lightning counterattack ended with Viktor Gyökeres laying the ball off to Gabriel Martinelli, who rattled the crossbar with his weaker foot missing one of Arsenal’s best opportunities of the first half.

Leverkusen started the second half brightly and took the lead just two minutes after the restart.

Alejandro Grimaldo’s corner was delivered to the back post, where Robert Andrich ghosted past Eberechi Eze and Jurrien Timber before heading past Raya in the 47th minute.

Arsenal pushed for a response and wasted a golden opportunity when Timber, left unmarked, headed over from close range following a cross from the left side.

The Gunners eventually found their breakthrough late in the game.

Substitute Noni Madueke injected energy after coming off the bench and won a penalty after skipping into the box before being tripped by Malik Tillman.

Kai Havertz stepped up and calmly squeezed the penalty past Janis Blaswich into the bottom left corner in the 89th minute, ensuring Arsenal avoided taking a deficit into the second leg.

Mikel Arteta may feel his side should have taken a first-leg lead back to North London, given Arsenal ended the match with an expected goals total of 1.65 from six shots, compared to Leverkusen’s 0.88 from their 10 attempts.

Ultimately, Arsenal claimed an important draw in a tightly contested match and will head back to North London with the tie level at 1–1.

While Leverkusen proved a difficult challenge, Arteta will be confident his side can capitalise on home advantage in the second leg to progress to the next round.
