Middle Eastern nation Jordan made their debut on the world stage by facing Austria, who were making their first World Cup appearance since 1998, at San Francisco’s Bay Arena, ultimately losing 3-1.

Al Nashama started the game extremely strongly, creating several early opportunities. Within the opening ten minutes, they attacked with intent, with Ehsan Haddad seeing an effort drift wide. Just minutes later, in the ninth minute, striker Moussa Al Tamari forced Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager into an early save.

The opposition, managed by former Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick, who recently extended his stay with Das Nationalteam, took the lead in the 20th minute. Winger Romano Schmid found the net with a long-range strike after being picked out by Xaver Schlager.

Jordan responded by looking to hit Austria on the counter-attack but lacked the cutting edge in the final third. Moussa Al Tamari did everything within his power to find an equaliser, although his efforts repeatedly went astray.

Thirteen minutes into the second half, Jordan finally scored their first-ever World Cup goal. Ali Olwan made history once again for his nation, having previously scored the hat-trick that secured qualification against Oman, this time capitalising on a counter-attack to find the back of the net.

The second half saw Austria introduce veteran attacker Marko Arnautović, who has represented Inter Milan, West Ham United, and Stoke City, alongside former Chelsea prospect Carney Chukwuemeka and PSV youngster Paul Wanner. Real Madrid defender David Alaba was also withdrawn in favour of Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Kevin Danso.

Arnautović thought he had scored on his World Cup debut in the 68th minute, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.

However, in the 78th minute, the game swung back in Austria’s favour as Jordan defender Yazan Al Arab diverted the ball into his own net following a powerful corner from Marcel Sabitzer.

In the 86th minute, Jordan pushed everyone forward in search of another equaliser, but Mahmoud Ali Mardi’s dangerous cross was dealt with by Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager.

The match featured a remarkable 10 minutes of stoppage time, adding even more drama to an entertaining contest.

Arnautović remained desperate to get on the scoresheet after his introduction and was eventually rewarded. Following a shot that deflected onto Saleem Obaid’s hand, the referee pointed to the penalty spot. The experienced forward stepped up and calmly converted to seal Austria’s 3-1 victory.

At full-time, Austria emerged 3-1 winners, but Jordan could take pride from a spirited and, at times, unfortunate performance on their World Cup debut.

Next up, Jordan face Algeria in Group J after the North Africans were heavily defeated by an Argentina side inspired by a Lionel Messi hat-trick. Jordan head coach Jamal Sellami will be hoping his side can bounce back and claim a positive result against the nation of his birth.
