Will Atlético Madrid vs Arsenal produce another Champions League classic like we saw last night between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich? In this competition, there is every chance, but critics would anticipate this match takes an opposite route.

Yesterday, at the Parc des Princes, the champions of France and Germany two sides famed across Europe for their attacking frontlines went head-to-head in an all-out game ending in nine goals. Meanwhile tonight, at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, the battle comes between two sides prided on their defensive discipline and rigidity.

Yet while defence will shape the contest, Arsenal can take confidence from the last time they faced Atlético in the Champions League. Mikel Arteta’s side swept Diego Simeone’s men aside with a commanding 4-0 victory in the league phase at the Emirates.

But with Simeone, knockout football is where the story usually changes. The only other time these sides met in Europe came in the 2018 Europa League semi-finals, when Atleti edged a 2-1 aggregate win before going on to lift the trophy.

Across all competitions, the recent form of both sides leaves plenty to be desired and even more to be proved. Arsenal have won just two of their last seven games, scoring only five goals, while hopes of a quadruple have dismantled after losing the Carabao Cup final, exiting the FA Cup, and surrendering a nine-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Atlético have also suffered recent heartbreak in the cup, losing on penalties to Real Sociedad in the final of the Copa del Rey, while their wider form has collapsed with seven defeats in their last nine games. This form sees Simeone’s men sit fourth in La Liga on 60 points 14 behind Real Madrid and 25 behind Barcelona.

Both managers also arrive with squads stung by injury. Atlético are without Pablo Barrios and Ilias Kostis, while Ademola Lookman remains a doubt, leaving Simeone with decisions to make in attack. Arsenal also travel light, with Jurrien Timber, Mikel Merino and Kai Havertz all unavailable, forcing Arteta to reshuffle both his defensive balance and attacking edge.

And yet, despite recent blows for both sides, this tie offers a chance to reshape history. Both Atlético and Arsenal are still chasing their first Champions League title, with a place in the final on the line and the chance to go one step further than before where Arsenal were heartbroken by Barcelona in 2006 and Atlético were denied twice by their city rivals Real Madrid in 2014 and 2016.

But first, a semi-final awaits.

If last night was chaos, tonight may be cagey but cagey does not mean quiet. With a place in the Champions League final on the line, every tackle, every mistake, and every moment could carry the weight of history. Tension alone could make this another classic.
