Atlético Madrid 5–2 Tottenham: Goalkeeper Errors Doom Spurs in Champions League Collapse

Spurs collapsed once again on a disastrous night against Atlético Madrid.

Spurs goalkeeper Kinsky was substituted after just 17 minutes on his Champions League debut as Tottenham quickly found themselves 3–0 down, with three calamitous slips leading directly to three goals.

Igor Tudor’s decision to bench Vicario, who had previously kept six clean sheets during Tottenham’s Champions League campaign, backfired massively.

With the scoreline eventually finishing 5–2 to Atlético Madrid, Spurs can consider themselves somewhat fortunate given their shocking start to the game.

The uphill task of the North London side overturning a three-goal deficit at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium now seems extremely unlikely.

Tudor also became the first manager in Spurs history to lose his first four matches, and many fans will now wonder whether he will even be in charge for the return leg next Wednesday.

Even the most optimistic Spurs supporter will struggle to believe their side can progress to the Champions League quarter-finals after that display in Madrid.

Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid could hardly believe their luck early on.

Marcos Llorente opened the scoring after Kinsky slipped while attempting to clear the ball, allowing the midfielder to finish comfortably into the bottom corner.

Moments later, Micky van de Ven also slipped, allowing Antoine Griezmann through on goal to score Atlético’s second.

Just two minutes later, Atlético struck again and this proved to be the most costly error of all.

With almost no pressure, Kinsky attempted to pass across his own goal but mis-hit the clearance completely, leaving Julián Álvarez with an empty net to tap home.

At that point, Tudor had seen enough.

Guglielmo Vicario was immediately introduced, although one of his first actions was to make a save off his own teammate Pape Sarr.

Unfortunately for Spurs, Robin Le Normand reacted quickest to head in the rebound.

In an astonishing first half, Tottenham found themselves 4–0 down inside 22 minutes.

Tottenham did manage to pull one back before half-time through Pedro Porro, who calmly slotted past Jan Oblak to offer Spurs a brief glimmer of hope.

However, Atlético quickly restored their dominance early in the second half.

Porro was left chasing Julián Álvarez, who added Atlético’s fifth goal following a scintillating counterattack.

Just seconds earlier, Oblak had produced an excellent save from a Richarlison header following a corner.

In a strange twist, Oblak also endured his own moment of misfortune later in the half. A poor clearance fell straight to Dominic Solanke, who scored Tottenham’s second goal.

Late in the match, João Palhinha and Cristian Romero clashed heads in an incident that summed up Tottenham’s chaotic evening.

Palhinha was substituted while Romero appeared visibly affected, leaving Spurs to finish the match with ten men.

The injury scare will be a concern ahead of Tottenham’s Premier League clash against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Somehow, in an already disappointing season, Spurs continue to find new lows.

There is little evidence to suggest that Igor Tudor can turn Tottenham’s fortunes around.

Performances have not improved since his appointment, and the Spurs squad does not appear fully convinced by his methods.

One awkward moment even saw Djed Spence approach Tudor to shake his hand after being substituted, highlighting the strange atmosphere surrounding the team.

It would be easy to blame Tudor entirely for placing Kinsky in such a difficult situation.

Vicario’s recent performances had been inconsistent, which may have forced Tudor into making that decision.

However, the handling of the substitution raised eyebrows. Tudor did not acknowledge Kinsky as the goalkeeper walked off the pitch visibly upset.

Furthermore, constant team rotation suggests a manager struggling to find the right balance.

Tudor’s post-match interview perhaps summed up the mood best.

When asked whether he deserved to keep his job, he simply responded:

The truth is many Spurs supporters will now question whether Tudor deserves to remain in charge after a performance like this.

And so the question remains once again:

What comes next for Tottenham Hotspur?
