Atlético Madrid and Arsenal played out a tense 1-1 draw in a Champions League semi-final first leg defined by decisive VAR interventions, leaving everything to play for at the Emirates next week.

If last night was chaotic, tonight was about control.

In a heavyweight match-up, the early stages were played at arm’s length: a couple of jabs from either side, but no real risk, no urgency, and no sign of a killer blow despite the whistles swirling around the cauldron-like Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

Whilst chances were scarce, Arsenal settled into possession, dictating the tempo through a commanding Declan Rice performance in midfield.

For Atlético, Julián Álvarez was the brightest spark, forcing the only shot on target of the first 40 minutes as his long-range effort tested David Raya.

Arsenal, though, only needed the game to open up once. As has so often been the case this season, one moment was enough and in the 42nd minute, it arrived.

After incisive passing from the visitors, Viktor Gyökeres received possession in the Atlético box and was bundled over by David Hancko. Without hesitation, referee Danny Makkelie pointed to the spot after a clumsy mistake.

Having won the penalty, the Swede stepped up and converted with pure power past Jan Oblak, handing Arsenal a 1-0 lead and a deserved reward for their assured control of the first half.

Atlético Respond After the Break

Atlético needed to respond after a flat first half and they did.

In the 48th minute, Julián Álvarez almost produced a stunning equaliser from distance. His free-kick curled towards the top corner and rippled the side-netting, briefly fooling the Metropolitano into celebration before the home fans realised it had landed just wide.

Suddenly, Atlético looked reborn.

Ademola Lookman then broke in behind and fired at Raya, who could only parry into the path of Antoine Griezmann. The Frenchman looked certain to score, but Gabriel Magalhães produced a vital last-ditch block to turn the effort behind.

From the resulting corner, Atlético found the reward their pressure deserved. Marcos Llorente’s wayward shot struck the hand of Ben White, sparking huge appeals that were soon backed up by VAR.

Álvarez stepped up and, having already shown his precision from 30 yards, made the penalty look even more routine. The Metropolitano had life and the pendulum had swung Arsenal’s control quickly became survival.

Griezmann then bent a delicate effort against the bar, before a sequence of thundering corners caused further panic in the Arsenal penalty area.

In the 73rd minute, Lookman had the clearest chance of the game. He skipped past Ben White and opened up a clear sight of goal, but Raya stood firm with a strong save. By now, Atlético’s momentum had grown into full second-half dominance.

Late VAR Twist Keeps Tie Alive

Five minutes later, almost out of nowhere, Arsenal broke forward. Eberechi Eze was clipped in the box by Blanco and, almost abruptly, the referee pointed to the spot.

The Metropolitano erupted, Diego Simeone raged, and striped shirts crowded the referee. VAR eventually intervened and, after a lengthy review, the contact was deemed insufficient.

The decision was overturned, leaving Arsenal frustrated by a 50/50 call decided by the finest of margins.

However, while the decision went in the home side’s favour, the chaos disrupted Atlético’s momentum and allowed Arsenal to regain a measure of control.

The game finished level, unfolding as the tight affair many predicted. But with its twists, fine margins and decisive VAR interventions, the first leg showed exactly why next week could still be anything but predictable.
