Arsenal welcome Atlético Madrid to the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night for what promises to be a thrilling Champions League encounter. The stakes are high, the atmosphere will be electric, and both teams come into the match with plenty to prove.
Arsenal are looking to extend their unbeaten run in Europe and build on their recent Premier League win over Fulham, while Atlético aim to reverse their poor record against English sides and continue their strong form.

This is only the second time the two clubs have met in European competition. Their previous clash came in the 2017–18 UEFA Europa League semi-finals, where Diego Simeone’s team eliminated Arsenal 2–1 on aggregate, with Diego Costa scoring the decisive goal.
Since then, Arsenal have been dominant against Spanish opposition. The Gunners have won their last six European matches against La Liga sides, defeating Real Madrid, Sevilla, Girona, and Athletic Club in the process. This run represents the longest winning streak by any club against Spanish opposition in Champions League history.
Atlético, on the other hand, have struggled on English soil. They have failed to win any of their five away matches against English teams in the Champions League group or knockout stages, drawing two and losing three. Overall, they have won just one of their last nine European games against English clubs a narrow 1–0 victory over Manchester United in March 2022.

Still, Simeone’s men arrive in North London unbeaten in six matches across all competitions, including a 5–2 triumph over Real Madrid, and will be confident of making a statement. Arsenal remain one of only two teams, alongside Inter Milan, yet to concede a goal in this season’s Champions League.
Mikel Arteta confirmed that defender Piero Hincapié will return to the squad, though Kai Havertz, Martin Ødegaard, and Noni Madueke remain unavailable. Atlético have also received a timely boost with Nico González cleared to travel after recovering from an injury scare, giving Simeone more flexibility in midfield.

Bukayo Saka continues to shine under Europe’s brightest lights, with 17 goal involvements in 19 Champions League appearances (11 goals and 6 assists). Since his debut in September 2023, he ranks second among wingers for minutes per goal involvement (89), behind only Barcelona’s Raphinha. Saka’s creativity and sharpness could prove vital in breaking down Atlético’s rigid defence.
For the visitors, Julián Álvarez has been in sensational form, scoring 13 goals in 11 Champions League appearances since the start of the 2023–24 season. His clinical finishing and movement in the box will be a major threat to Arsenal’s back line.
The clash at the Emirates promises a fascinating contrast in styles: Arsenal’s fluid attacking football against Atlético’s disciplined, counter-attacking approach. With both teams chasing a place in the knockout stages, this could be one of the standout fixtures of the group phase.
