Arsenal produced a stunning 13-minute spell of attacking brilliance to overwhelm Atlético Madrid and claim a resounding 4–0 victory in the Champions League.
The Gunners started brightly, with early chances from Eberechi Eze, who struck the crossbar, and Bukayo Saka, whose one-on-one effort was saved by Jan Oblak. Myles Lewis-Skelly also went close before Saka whipped in a superb cross for Gabriel Martinelli to finish, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
Atlético gradually grew into the game, seeing more of the ball and trying to impose control. A long pass over the top nearly caught Arsenal out when David Raya misjudged its flight, allowing Madrid to take a quick throw with the goalkeeper stranded. However, the visitors narrowly missed the open goal. Clear chances were limited in a goalless first half, but Arsenal’s superior attacking intent was reflected in the numbers generating 2.24 expected goals to Atlético’s 0.67.

The breakthrough came early in the second half when Gabriel headed home from Declan Rice’s pinpoint free-kick. That opened the floodgates. Seven minutes later, Martinelli doubled the lead with a perfectly placed finish after a driving run from Lewis-Skelly. Almost immediately from the restart, Viktor Gyökeres reacted quickest to turn in Eze’s scuffed volley from close range. Three minutes later, the Swedish striker grabbed his second of the night, bundling Gabriel’s far-post header over the line to complete the win.
Julián Álvarez struck the crossbar late on for Atlético, but any goal would have been nothing more than consolation.
Mikel Arteta’s ruthless side continue their fine record against Spanish opposition, with Arsenal now having won their last six European matches against La Liga teams including victories over Real Madrid, Sevilla, Girona, and Athletic Club.

For Atlético, the struggles on English soil persist. They have now failed to win any of their six away matches against English sides in the Champions League, drawing two and losing four. Overall, they have just one win in their last ten European encounters with Premier League clubs.
Arsenal remain one of only two teams, alongside Inter Milan, yet to concede a goal in this season’s competition. The win lifts them to third in their group, while Atlético’s second defeat in three matches leaves them in 18th place overall.
Arteta’s focus now turns to the Premier League, where Arsenal host Crystal Palace at the Emirates on Sunday. Atlético Madrid, meanwhile, travel to Real Betis for their next La Liga fixture.
