Arsenal kicked off their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 win away in the north of Spain. The squad depth, which looks to be a standout factor this season, made the difference on the night, as substitutes Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard combined for both goals. Mikel Arteta’s changes proved a masterstroke, ensuring Arsenal left Bilbao with three vital points.

It took Martinelli just 36 seconds after coming off the bench to break the deadlock. Trossard slipped him through on goal, and the Brazilian used his fresh legs and pace to surge clear before calmly slotting past the in-form goalkeeper, who had been making a string of smart saves to frustrate Arsenal, but was finally undone by Martinelli’s clinical finish.

Three minutes from time, Martinelli turned provider. The winger beat his man down the flank before cutting the ball back for an unmarked Trossard, who calmly picked his spot to double the Gunners’ lead.

It was the perfect start to the campaign for Arteta’s side, who reached the last four last season and look like strong candidates for European glory again. Arsenal host Olympiacos at the Emirates next, aiming to make it two wins from two. They will also be boosted by the expected return of Bukayo Saka and William Saliba to the squad.
